From the helm

Welcome to the Lightwave Yachts Lifestyle magazine, cruisefornews. We have much to share and celebrate at Lightwave Yachts and this magazine captures the unique Lightwave spirit. As one of our LW owners so eloquently put it “you don’t just buy a Lightwave, you buy a family”!

At Lightwave Yachts in 2007 we have enjoyed record breaking sales at the Australian Boat Shows with the release of the newly designed Raised Helm Station on the Sailing models; we’ve taken on new business developments including the new racing line, Raider One Design; we have continued refinements in product supply and delivery; many of our Lightwave owners have achieved cruising milestones and we celebrated the 50th Lightwave launch at the fourth Annual Lightwave Owners Regatta. Over this period we have welcomed many new owners and it is pleasing that strong demand continues for the full range of Lightwave models, with International interest looming from the Asian areas.

Our “new product” development has been very active, with previous Lightwave 38′ owner Steve Eastwood commissioning Lightwave Yachts to build him a custom Lightwave 46′ Power Cat, due for late 2008 delivery. We have taken the opportunity to fast track the development of a new deck for the larger models and will release the Lightwave 45′ Grande´ next year.

We had a fabulous turn out for the fourth Annual Lightwave Owners Regatta with a record breaking fleet of 18 Lightwaves in attendance and over half our Owners attending. We look forward to our Regatta taking a new format next year to encompass both sail and power into the one event, rather than being a “sail” focus.

We are very proud of our achievements in 2007 and continue to strive for delivering the ultimate product and service. I acknowledge the dedication and commitment demonstrated by our staff and suppliers in achieving this and thank all our Lightwave owners for their continuing patronage.

Season Greetings

Roger Overell.

Lightwaves parade in paradise

From an outsider’s perspective, one would wonder what they had fallen upon as they watched the automatic door of the mini bus open and a flood of colour and naked bellies disembark. For the 150 guests in the know, they were at the ‘Rio Carnivale’ themed 2007 Lightwave Yachts Annual Owners Regatta which was being held on the dazzling Gold Coast from the 20th.

22nd April 2007.

A record 18 Lightwave catamarans and over 26 Owners converged on the Gold Coast to enjoy a weekend of partying and social cruising both offshore and on the beautiful Broadwater. It was going to be a hard feat outdoing last years ‘10 year Celebration’, but given the turnout, without a doubt, this years was certainly going to be memorable.

One of the highlights of the weekend was the special visit from two Lightwave International cruisers. Owners, Peter and Penny from Innforapenny II, who have been participating in an Around The World Rally, and Terry and Jan from Ridgee Didge, currently cruising in Thailand. Both couples flew back to the Gold Coast to attend the Lightwave Regatta and share a few chapters of their overseas journeys and cruising experiences, with their fellow Lightwave cruisers.

The competition between the cats and their crews began early Friday evening with the ‘Rio Carnivale Cocktail Party’. Leaving their Lightwave’s docked in the elegant surrounds of Sanctuary Cove, the crews headed to the Hope Island Function Centre. Here the crews vied for valuable Lightwave dollars by meeting certain requirements including dressing in theme and bringing their own Lightwave catamarans and crew. The result being thousands of LW dollars allowing them to bid in the infamous Lightwave Auction sponsored by various suppliers including Volvo Penta, Ronstan, All Yacht Spars, GM Sails and Grainger Designs. The items for Auction were extravagant to say the least and obviously the men wearing sequins thought it was worth the public humiliation and ribbing they were to receive over the next few days.

Renowned as the Lightwave/Lightwind regatta, the sparse, if ever present puff of air doesn’t necessary fulfil the requirements for competitive edge sailing, but certainly entertains the idea of social, fun days out on the water with a little competitive rivalry between owners.

With the magnificent Surfers Paradise skyline as the backdrop the 18 Lightwave Cats created a visual symphony heading offshore to enjoy a fun run course that involved colorful spinnakers, windward/leeward tactical maneuvers, discovering what the ROW rule is all about, battles on board with “who is the Skipper here”, and crews lining the decks, soaking up rays, enjoying magical displays from the plentiful marine life. The growing Lightwave Power fleet revealed their real power, participating as the Official vessels, acting as moving markers!

At the end of the day, the Lightwave cats leisurely made their way back to the Paradise Point anchorage, to enjoy a fiery night under the stars consisting of a hearty meal, fine wine, cold beers, crews socialising, sharing tales from the sea, and being entertained by fire dancers and the horizontal bungee.

As dawn broke and cast a golden mist over the fleet, our owners and their crews made their way to shore, to be chaperoned to the local Yacht Club for Annual Cup Presentation Breakfast. This year the Lightwave Cup winners were Lightwave 38 NORTHSTAR and Lightwave 45 CAPTAIN JACK. Joining the pointy end of the fleet were WATERLINE, OUT OF THE BLUE II, PRETTY PUSS and CATRA.

Without giving the crews any time for the after party blues to set in, we had them back out competing in an in-shore rally come mini triathlon. A staggered start had the Lightwave cats chasing each other up the narrow Broadwater waterways, collecting items on the way, either visually or physically from surrounding islands. Highly amused crews made their way to South Stradbroke Island for a Beach BBQ to gracefully end a sensational weekend of celebrating the ultimate lifestyle… LIGHTWAVE.

Thanks to all the efforts of Lightwave owners and their crews from ZIG ZAG, BLUES POINT, ULIMATE DREAM, LONGTIME, EQUILIBRIUM, BAHAMA, NORTH STAR, REFLECTIONS, DELIGHT, WAVE DANCER, RIDGEE DIDGE, STARFISH, SILVER GULL, INNFORAPENNY II, BRAHMINY, WATERLINE, FLASH DANCER, SALACIA, CAPTAIN JACK, ALLIKAT, OUT OF THE BLUE II, CATRA, PRETTY PUSS, MUSCAT 7 and TRIBAL.

Thanks to our suppliers and media partners for their generous support ALL YACHT SPARS, VOLVO, RONSTAN, GM SAILS, GRAINGER DESIGNS, ASHTIA UPHOLSTERY, FGI, GOLD COAST MARINE CENTRE, MULTIHULL WORLD & CRUISING HELMSMAN.

2008 LIGHTWAVE YACHTS OWNERS REGATTA April 18 – 20 “ROAMING REGATTA”

2007 launchings

ALLIKAT

John & Pam Wallace proudly own the 4th Lightwave 45′ Sailing Catamaran, “ALLIKAT”, fondly named after their daughters, Allison, Elisabeth and Katharine (with a playful cat reference). “Allikat” features beautiful Burmese teak throughout, to complement the leather finishing detail. Currently enjoying semi-retirement, that lovely stage of life where you still work but holiday most of the time, John and Pam have recently returned from an extended cruise up North to Cairns on “Allikat”.

John and Pam had previously owned a Beneteau and had experience sailing in the Whitsundays and Tahiti. A holiday on a catamaran convinced them that this was the way to go for their retirement. “The boat is set up for ease of handling. This helps in the initial training stage. The two of us comfortably handle the boat. We feel really confident. It is very responsive under sail or motor and I’ve really enjoyed the performance of it. It’s a great size for having guests join you for a holiday. It’s big enough to enjoy your own space whilst not being so big that you can’t handle it single handedly. This is a really important consideration when you are considering cruising as a couple”.

Based in Batemans Bay, New South Wales, “Allikat” will enjoy celebrating New Years in Sydney, before returning to Queensland for extensive cruising in 2008.

PRETTY PUSS

Ian and Lyn Torode had the Lightwave 38′ on their wish list for some time, and in April “Pretty Puss” was launched. “Pretty Puss’ turned heads at Sanctuary Cove & Airlie Beach Boat Shows, and then joined the Whitsundays Charter fleet with Cumberland Charter Yachts for the start of the cruising season.

Ian and Lyn and their two boys enjoyed some cruising time on “Pretty Puss” before delivering her to the Charter fleet in June. “We had a great trip north despite a good breeze on the day the ship went up on the beach at Newcastle. We had 40 – 45 knots up the stern but the boat performed beautifully and we saw 15 knots with just the jib up”.

“For us the best ownership arrangement was for the boat to be in charter. Firstly we would like more time on her but there is not much cruising in Melbourne and we would like to cruise more in the islands up north”. “In a few years I hope to wind back my practice and then we would like to spend more time on the boat”.

“Pretty Puss” is sure to leave an impression on those fortunate enough to charter her! Featuring the new Raised Helm Station, the charter operators comment on the Lightwave’s 38’s innovative use of space. “There is always somewhere to sit and rest. The cockpit table makes the outside area complete. Lightwave have the best quality finish and its so easy to keep clean. It may not be the biggest volume boat we have in the fleet, but it has the best use of space. Simple and clever”.

NAUTI BOUY

Paco & Nina Arevalo from Western Australia, are owners of a new Lightwave 45′ NAUTI BOUY. After twenty five relentless years of being in business this newly semi-retired man was determined to achieve his dream. His requirement was brief. He wanted change out of $1M. He wanted to purchase a sailing boat to take him world cruising and ultimately sail her to Spain where she will be based.

Launched in May, NAUTI BOUY featured Lightwave’s Signature New Raised Position, Bose sound system throughout, full starboard ensuite with separate shower, and remote control auto pilot, oh… did we mention the crate of wine!! Paco joined the great migration North in June, picking up his family at Airlie Beach and continued cruising for a few months. Next year they will spend some time in the Kimberleys and then set off to Spain in 2009. The name… well that’s self-explanatory! With a nautical twist!

MUSCAT 7

Congratulations to Nils and Mayte, owners of the 50th Lightwave, a Lightwave 38′ “Muscat 7”.

Launched among the flurry of Regatta fever, the crowned Lightwave 38 “Muscat 7” emerged among the feathers and bling of the 2007 Rio Carnivale Lightwave Owners Regatta, enjoying her grand first sail, with a supportive fleet of 18 other Lightwaves.

The name with its cat reference also has a more significant meaning, of where they met, in the Capital of Oman… “its all so fitting”.

Nils and Mayte are based in North Queensland with the best cruising grounds in the World, the Whitsundays, on their doorstep. They have been enjoying coastal cruising this year and plan to cruise the Kimberleys, Louisiades, Solomans, Vanuatu and New Calendonia… to name a few.

TRIBAL

Congratulations to Geoff and Brenda Tribe who took delivery of their Lightwave 45′ “Tribal” in August. Ready to take the plunge into semi-retirement they were keen for a boat that could take them to faraway places, and that would accommodate their family on extended trips. Geoff and Brenda are fairly new to sailing and plan to spend time locally getting to know their boat and joining the local Yacht Club to participate in casual racing to increase their sailing knowledge and experiences. Throughout the build of their boat, they found the helpfulness & product knowledge of staff tremendous, particularly when taking on this new lifestyle venture, and the support of other Lightwave Owners “excellent -fantastic!”

“’Tribal’ relates to our surname and the spirit of how we envisage the boat operating! Considering our family and friends, the boat could be out of control and very TRIBAL often. We plan to cruise up North and maybe Noumea mid next year”.

RED UNDIES

Ken and Judi are a dynamic duo… embracing life at a fast pace, it only suits that their boat be a reflection of them. Involved in the Lightwave fraternity for a number of years, being friends of two time Lightwave owners Peter and Penny of Innforapenny II, Ken and Judi have been observing from the sideline, playing guests at Lightwave Regattas, helping out as delivery crew, and sharing holidays on board Peter and Penny’s latter Lightwave 38′ and their current Lightwave 45′.

A glorious launching was shared with Ken and Judi. The boat made an impression at the Sydney International Boat Show, with its glamorous “penthouse” fit out featuring a painted feature wall in the saloon and majestic soft furnishings throughout.

She now calls Lake Macquarie home, with the plan to offer Skippered Charters on the Lake, once the initial cruising plans are completed. The name…. so the explanation goes, as this Launching Day photo suggests!!!!, is a play on words, with the “redundancy” funds that helped pay for the boat…

50th LIGHTWAVE LAUNCH

Just last year Lightwave Yachts celebrated 10 years and this year they have achieved another significant milestone – the 50th Lightwave launch. Sporting four models in Lightwave’s Ultimate Cruising range, it was coincidental that their most produced model, the Lightwave 38′, was crowned with this glory.

Although initally, Lightwave Yachts offered stage completed boats, for the most part of their production history, they have produced completed boats. The Lightwave cats are recognised as one of the best finished boats available on the market and have received awards acknowledging this high standard, including the prestigious AMIF Boat of the Year (Sailing Multihull) award in 2000, and the 2006 Boat of the Year Commendation Award (Sailing Non-Trailerable).

Lightwave Yachts have had all smooth sailing in their eleven years of business and have one of the most respected names in the Marine Industry, with a key formula to their dazzling success being STABLE, STEADY GROWTH… at current production rates Lightwave Yachts will achieve the next 50 in half the time it took to achieve the first 50!

Lightwave 55

Lw45 Popup Plumbing

Plumbing System

The Lightwave 46 has 800L of fresh water & 800L of diesel, in tanks that are built directly into the hull. High quality, purpose grade materials are used in this labour intensive construction method which guarantees an extremely high-quality product that will last for the lifetime of the boat. Dual freshwater pumps provided piece of mind through redundancy. A water transfer line is built into the system to allow water to travel between either tank. Fresh water vacuum toilets that use minimal fresh water (less than 400ml per flush) are a standard feature on the Lightwave 46, eliminating the stale saltwater smell that can encroach the cabin area.  A saltwater system is also fitted to the vessel to allow an anchor wash, saltwater tap in the galley and hose in the cockpit.

L46i Engine 2

Electrical System

The Lightwave 46 is designed for self-sufficient blue water cruising. The vessel is supplied with a 12-volt DC and a 240-volt AC electrical system. A 600Ah AGM battery system is offered on the vessel with an optional 660Ah lithium-ion battery bank. There are various solar options producing up to 2000kw of power. There is also the option to have a 4Kw AC diesel generator which is coupled with the inverter to allow for a high output. All areas of the vessels electrics are designed to be easily accessible and traceable with minimal disruption to the boats systems. Electrical components on the Lightwave 46 are carefully selected to ensure a minimum power consumption is achieved. Onboard systems incorporate the latest in technology, allowing remote control and monitoring of critical power systems, battery and charging status, tank levels, bilge pumps, aerial and security CCTV as well as an array of other custom options.

Lw45 Popup Engine

Engineering Systems

The Lightwave 46 offers a very spacious area in the external engine rooms, to accommodate the standard 50hp engines & other engineering systems. All steering components as well as the optional generator are housed in the engine rooms, carefully positioned for ease of access for servicing and maintenance. The engine rooms are separated from the accommodation area with a bulkhead lined in sound dampening material to defer noise, heat and odour from entering the cabins. The engine rooms are also accessible from the inside of the boat if required.

Lw45 Popup Img

Sailing Systems

Designed with the priority for the ultimate sailing experience, the deck layout and sailing systems are configured for ease of handling while shorthanded. The line system on the Lightwave 46 has been designed so all lines are organised and accessible from an area where the sails can be easily observed. Lines all lead to the cockpit and travel under serviceable fibreglass boards which not only keep the lines organised, but also remove possible tripping hazards. Hanging points are purposely provided creating a neat and organised place for line tails to be stored. Anderson winches and Ronstan deck gear are superiorly selected as standard equipment, with optional electric winches also available. A bridal main sheet system is cleverly applied to eliminate the safety concerns of a traveller car system traditionally used on catamarans.
