5 DAY MAGNIFICO REEF TRIP WITH SUSAN
Weather forecast was for a week of only 5-10knots winds….Wahoo!!!
We decided to give our new Hookah and dive camera a good work over & we ventured out the green zones out from Townsville , firstly to Wheeler Reef 45 nm out then another 13 nm to Bowl reef then finally 70nm out to Myrmidon reef. Water clarity was good every where with 20- 25m visibility .
Wheeler Reef is always easy, safe & good .
At Bowl Reef we anchored in a nice sheltered anchorage behind the reef near to several great bommies in 20 – 30+ meters,heaps of beautiful Fan Coral and great fish life….. Reef types, Reef Sharks and Pelagic..had 3 wonderfull dives.
At Myrmidon reef we found a nice cut away into the East side of the reef edge that got us out of the 1.5 meter South Easterly swell & short southerly chop & it gave us just enough swinging room. We dropped the pick in a small sand patch in only 10 meters of water….so good. Had 6 dives over 3 days on bommies starting at the back of our boat in 10 meters and to further out and in 15 – 25+meters . We are on the edge of the Coral Sea with the ocean a kilometer deep several miles out on the seaward side of the reef.
Being so isolated & close to deep water there was an abundance of everything…… lots of good coral, superb reef fish ,many sharks, GT’S,Wahoo,Mackeral, Queen fish, some beautiful schools of bright blue Fusilier’s & several massive fish almost 1.5 – 2 meters long and 150kg+. ….Biggest Hump Headed Maori Wrasse I’ve ever seen and a big groper( top pics) that scared the shit out of Susan when he crept up behind us for a close inspection at the weird looking intruders in to his home patch!!!
We tried fishing when were out of the green zones but I think we’ve lost the fishing plot at the moment..I will seek inspiration with some fishing mates later in the year!!
