CROATIA
Our time in Croatia is nearly at an end. We will check out tomorrow and head to Venice about 50 miles west of us.
The last couple of weeks have been really good fun as we met up in Dubrovnik with Roy, Liz, Graham and Beth (Central Coast sailing friends) who were chartering a Sunsail boat. There were two other boats in their flotilla (all Ozzies) and a Croatian guide so we tagged along with them. As you can imagine there were lots of sundowners (often starting in the morning) and we even managed an Aussie BBQ on Innforapenny. In true Ozzie fashion it was bring your own meat, BYOG, and a good time was had by all.
After listening to our cruising friends, from Yacht Marine in Turkey we were beginning to wonder whether we had made the right decision to come to Croatia because very few people were impressed – they said the people where unfriendly, it was expensive and most important the wine was crap!! Wrong on all accounts.
Croatia is stunningly beautiful. (no body denied that) The people are lovely, yes, it’s a bit pricy in marinas especially for us in a cat as they charge double and it can cost up to $200 a night but we got over that hurdle by anchoring in bays most of the time. The wine is quite palatable after the first few glasses…. O.K, bottles. Sometimes you had to pay in certain anchorages whether you picked up one of their mooring buoys or not, but it wasn’t too expensive. Also most restaurants on the islands had mooring facilities you could use for no charge, although you where expected to spend some money at there establishment.
We can’t get over how many charter boats there are and Croatia seems to have the most.. Sunsail have 250 boats here alone and they are just one of many chartering companies operating. Its not as crowded as we were told it would be but we are not in the height of the season yet.
I don’t know what it is about Croatia but every body seems to take their clothes off.. We’ve never seen so many people in the altogether. Most of them are German or Italian and we can assure you it isn’t always a pretty sight.
The cuisine has improved ten fold since we left Turkey. Looking forward to the flavours of Italy. Will keep you posted.
