ENJOYING THE MALDIVES
Thursday 25 January, 2007 – 05:47
We arrived safely in the Maldives without any hassles – it only took a couple of days. We had to motor sail for some of it as the wind was light and as usual right behind us, but we still managed to do 200 mile days. The Maldives is certainly different stuck out in the middle of the Indian Ocean. There isn’t any land above 5 metres in height and what there is, it’s heavily built on. Without the tourist resorts, there’s over 80, I can’t see how the country would have survived. Its a complete contrast from Sri Lanka – much wealthier, due to the tourist resorts, but the people don’t seem so friendly – whether its the increase in prosperity or the lack of alcohol,(its Muslim) I’m not sure? Talking of alcohol we are running out, we should have bought more in Lankawi – I blame the boys!!! It looks as if Penny might have to go cold turkey until we get to Crete!!! We hope to spend the next 10 days going around the numerous atolls enjoying the scuba diving and generally chilling out until we do the most stressful part of the journey to the Red Sea.
