COLI REEF -Top Spot!
After much messing about around the Townsville area it was terrific to get back out to the outer reef with Susan. Gentle winds from the north meant Coil reef 63nm NE from Townsville was a beaut spot & we had wonderful diving and snorkeling with 20 me visibility. Coils a small but very colourful healthy reef in a half moon shape & one of the few reefs facing north. We were able to drop the anchor in 18me of water with enough swing room and protection in the mild 5 – 15knot E – NW wind & waves…. on the fourth day the wind shifted sou east at 20-30 knots south so we powered back to Magnetic Is.
Coral Bommie in the Bay..A1
Close to the main reef in 10 – 15 me is a magnificent Bommie with every sort of healthy hard Coral & Reef fish imaginable . It took an hour to snorkel all the way around it and it was truly superb..Susan took some top pics and we just loved it & several other little close by bommies.
Outer Bommie Grey Sharks and more
About 300 me to the South is a large shoal- bommie area which falls to 25me. I left the hookah on the dingy and towed it around at slack water…. some times it towed me as the currents are strong & variable around here. On one occasion there was 3 little white tip sharks cruising along the bottom and in mid water there was another 3 plump Grey Sharks buzzing me….and as soon as they left 3 Giant Trevally and a several mackerel came in for a look. I was so wrapped. In the deeper water there were plenty of nice fans.
