CORAL SEA 5 – FLINDERS CAY
What a magnificent sand cay. We anchored 400meters out from it on a sandy bottom in 6 meters of water. Such a beautiful place. On the 200me long cay there were nesting Masked & Brown Booby Birds, assorted Terns, Land hermit crabs & a few copulating Green Turtles (they made us all miss our ladies at this piont).
The surrounding shallows were crystal clear , the coral was dead but the water was full of turtles, sting rays and a smattering of different fish including many Giant Trevally (G.T’s) which were great sport for poppa casting fisho’s!!
I had my best ever encounter with a big turtle ever when one swam up to me allowing me to pat it before it slowly swam away…amazing.
CORAL SEA 6 – FISH CATCHES MAN
After 6 days of non stop activity the captain was totally stuffed and with winds picking up to 20 – 25knots I declared 2 days of rest anchored near the Cay. First day the fisho’s hit the cay with their unstoppable enthusiasm and favorite casting poppas but soon returned declaring they had caught a GT a large Chinese footballer and Geoff!!! Well the fish had actually caught Geof and with 2 hooks from the treble firmly embedded in his arm it didn’t look pretty.
Luckily Geoff is a gutsy guy and armed with a bottle of Whisky & a bottle of Betadine managed to push the hooks all the way thru so our muscle man Clinton was able to cut the barbs of with a pair of side cutters & then the hooks could be threaded back out with minimal damage. His arm healed with out infection…….I now own 2 pair of bolt cutters!!
